The Government has formalized the suspension of the Open, Simultaneous, and Mandatory Primaries (PASO) at the national level for the elections of the year 2025. This decision implies that political parties must determine their candidates through internal mechanisms, without the intervention of the general electorate.
Law 27.783, published in the Official Bulletin, establishes the suspension of the PASO and all obligations related to their organization and execution. Additionally, the deadlines set in the National Electoral Code will be applied, and modifications will be made to adapt them to the elimination of the primaries.
The draw for media spaces for electoral advertising will take place within two days following the officialization of lists, as established in article 3 of the regulation. For its part, the law will come into effect the day after its publication in the Official Bulletin, as indicated in article 4.
The elimination of the PASO implies that political parties will define their candidates through internal processes, without a prior vote from the citizenry. This measure could generate changes in the electoral strategy of the different coalitions, as there will be no prior instance to measure strengths or consolidate leadership before the general election.
