The national deputy for Mendoza, Julio Cobos, requested a detailed report on the possible implications of the measure recently announced by the president regarding Argentina's exit from Mercosur. Cobos emphasized the historical importance of Mercosur for Argentine politics and economy, highlighting that this bloc is fundamental for the country's commercial, political, and diplomatic relations.
Cobos warned that this eventual decision would have a significant impact, especially on regional economies, thus it is necessary to conduct a thorough analysis of the consequences and possible scenarios before proceeding. He pointed out that leaving Mercosur would represent a drastic change in Argentine foreign policy with unpredictable consequences.
In his analysis, Julio Cobos underscored the key role of Mercosur as a driver of Argentine trade, especially in exports that have averaged 14 billion dollars in the last five years. Additionally, he mentioned that the loss of export markets would have a direct impact on employment and value-added products in all Argentine provinces.
The legislator stressed the importance of strengthening trade relations with Mercosur partners to facilitate the placement of products in international markets and attract investments. He asserted that any decision related to leaving Mercosur must be carefully evaluated to protect both national and regional interests.
In that regard, along with other legislators, Cobos submitted a request for a report to the national Executive about the possible signing of a free trade agreement with the United States and Argentina's exit from Mercosur, in response to President Milei's statements about seizing commercial opportunities with the U.S. Cobos emphasized the need for a deep analysis before taking measures that could affect the country's foreign policy and economy.
