National Strike Called by Argentine Educators

The Confederation of Workers in Education of the Argentine Republic (CTERA) has announced a new teacher strike for Thursday, March 13. The main objective of this measure is to defend public education and the rights of education workers. After an extraordinary congress held at the end of February, the teachers' union decided to call for a national day of struggle to demand a salary increase and protect labor rights.

In a statement, CTERA communicated its decision to promote this action throughout the country to demand the urgent call for the national teachers' salary negotiations, the education financing law, the restoration and updating of the Teacher Incentive Fund (FONID), and connectivity. They also propose to adjust the minimum salary "in line with the current context" to ensure that no teacher in the country falls below the poverty line.

Additionally, the Confederation demands a larger national education budget to ensure that schools are in decent conditions for teaching and learning throughout the country. They seek an increase in the PROGRESAR scholarships and in the funds allocated for nutritional reinforcement for lunch and snacks for students during their school day.

CTERA emphasizes that this strike also aims to protect the public pension system, union and provincial health services, and they oppose the criminalization of social protest. The day of struggle will include mobilizations, events, open radios, and other actions across the country.

Ultimately, within the framework of the broadest unity of the labor movement, trade union centers, and social movements, CTERA reaffirms its decision to advance in calling for a national day of struggle with a strike and federal march.
