Milei Criticizes Mercosur and Seeks Agreement with the U.S.

In the opening speech of the session, the president reaffirmed his critical approach towards Mercosur and made strong statements. He expressed that since its creation, the bloc has only benefited large Brazilian industrialists at the expense of Argentinians. President Milei highlighted the need to regain trade freedom for Argentinians, allowing the entry of higher quality goods and services at more convenient prices.

He indicated that it is essential to flexibilize and even consider the possibility of abandoning Mercosur to take advantage of a trade agreement with the United States. He stated that no country can establish a free trade treaty outside of Mercosur and emphasized the importance of offering more competition in the local market, facilitating the acquisition of foreign products.

President Milei has been questioning the functioning of Mercosur and advocating for a free trade treaty with the United States. He criticized the inefficiency of the local industry, suggesting that jobs generated in this sector could be replaced by other growing sectors through imports. Furthermore, he highlighted the opening up of imports of various products and the need to strengthen international trade relations.

In the context of a possible negotiation with the United States, President Milei emphasized the importance of exploring international trade agreements to boost the Argentine economy. Although these initiatives may conflict with Mercosur rules, the government considers it crucial to open up to new trade opportunities.
