Concerns Rise Over Argentina's Democratic Stability

Parlasur legislators express deep concern over President Javier Milei's calls for the resignation of Buenos Aires' governor, warning of threats to democracy and federalism in Argentina.

Concerns Rise Over Argentina's Democratic Stability

The UxP bloc of the Parlasur has requested the international community and, in particular, the brother countries of Mercosur, to closely monitor the events in Argentina and express their commitment to the defense of democracy and the rule of law in the entire region. In a letter addressed to the ambassadors of Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia, the parliamentarians expressed their deep concern over the recent statements by President Javier Milei, who has publicly called for the resignation of the governor of the province of Buenos Aires and suggested intervention in that district.

In the document, the legislators of Parlasur described the president's attitude as a "clear encroachment on democratic institutions and federalism enshrined in our National Constitution." It is considered unacceptable that from the highest authority of the country, expressions that undermine the principle of provincial autonomy and the sovereign will of the people of Buenos Aires, who have democratically elected their representatives, are promoted. Furthermore, it is argued that the statements of the head of state "evoke authoritarian practices incompatible with democratic values and the international commitments undertaken by Argentina within the framework of Mercosur and the Latin American community."
