The bloc of national deputies from Union for the Homeland formally submitted today the request for impeachment against President Javier Milei following his participation in the launch of the cryptocurrency Libra, an operation viewed as a "scam" by various political and social sectors. The action, led by Germán Martínez, is based on three articles of the National Constitution and focuses on alleged "serious facts that constitute grounds for political responsibility due to misconduct and/or potential crimes in the performance of his duties" by the head of state.
In the document submitted to the lower house, the opposition deputies request that the Impeachment Commission thoroughly investigate the reported facts, based on recent events in which the president and high-ranking officials of the La Libertad Avanza government have been involved in suspicious connections with the promoters of the crypto asset.
Among the charges in the request for impeachment are misconduct, violation of the National Constitution and the Public Ethics Law, as well as criminal offenses such as fraud, public administration fraud, abuse of power, incompatible negotiations with public function, and fraudulent market manipulation of financial assets.
The deputies point out that the alleged crimes committed by Milei and his circle have generated a "discrediting of the Argentine State at the national and international level" and a negative economic and patrimonial impact. In their arguments, the project emphasizes that it is necessary to prevent public officials from favoring private interests to the detriment of the general interest.
Regarding Milei's participation in the announcement of the cryptocurrency Libra, the deputies emphasized that its promotion resulted in a "premeditated scam" and that, without his support, the digital currency would not have gained the necessary popularity to carry out the fraud.
Finally, the importance of investigating the connections of the cryptocurrency creators with the presidential environment was mentioned to address all the implications arising from this case.
