15 Years Since the Femicidal Tragedy of Wanda Taddei

This February marks 15 years since Wanda Taddei was tragically killed by her husband Eduardo Vázquez in a brutal act of domestic violence in Mataderos. Despite a lengthy judicial process, the case remains a painful reminder of femicide in Argentina, as justice is still sought for victims today.

15 Years Since the Femicidal Tragedy of Wanda Taddei

Court No. 20, composed of judges Pablo Gustavo Laufer, Luis Fernando Niño, and Patricia Gabriela Mallo, sentenced the assailant to 18 years in prison for the crime of aggravated homicide by the bond, mitigated by committing it in a state of violent emotion. The decision, considered absurd by many, was based on the idea that the crime occurred during a discussion in which the victim, Wanda, was allegedly "filled with rage".

Wanda's case became one of the most resonant in the country due to the cruelty of the femicide committed by her husband, Eduardo Vázquez, drummer of Callejeros, in February 2010. Wanda was set on fire in the midst of a quarrel by Vázquez, resulting in her death days later due to severe burns suffered over almost her entire body. Following this crime, Vázquez was arrested and subsequently convicted.

In 2013, the Federal Criminal Cassation Chamber modified the first-instance ruling, dismissing the existence of violent emotion and changing the sentence to life imprisonment. Despite the initial sentence of 18 years, Eduardo Vázquez continues to serve a 35-year sentence in the Ezeiza Penitentiary Complex.

Wanda Taddei's story continues to evoke pain and remembrance, being one of the most significant cases in the fight for justice in Argentina. Despite having been a couple in the past, Wanda and Eduardo's lives took a tragic turn after they remarried in November 2009, months before the terrible crime that shocked the country.
