Teachers Announce Protest Ahead of School Year

In Argentina, teachers unions plan strikes due to lack of government negotiations on salaries before the school year starts, affecting 12 provinces including Buenos Aires.

Teachers Announce Protest Ahead of School Year

The union confederations Unión Docentes Argentinos (UDA), the Association of Technical Teaching Staff (AMET), and the Confederation of Argentine Educators (CEA) have called for protests in the City of Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Santa Fe, Corrientes, Entre Ríos, Formosa, Jujuy, Mendoza, Salta, San Juan, San Luis, and Santa Cruz. These protests would take place due to the government's failure to convene national teachers' negotiations.

The Confederation of Workers of Education of the Argentine Republic (CTERA) is also evaluating taking action. The CTERA general secretaries will meet in a plenary session to discuss the next steps. The CGT teachers' unions have analyzed the salary situation in the sector and expressed concern over the lack of a call for national salary negotiations by the government.

Sergio Romero from UDA, Sara García from AMET, and Fabián Felman from CEA have been responsible for announcing the possible protests. The CGT has indicated that the minimum salary for teachers has been maintained at $420,000 since last August, an amount that is below the poverty line, according to the head of UDA.

The CGT warns of a salary crisis in the sector, with minimum salaries ranging from $420,000 to $931,186 last January. The lack of a call for salary negotiations and the situation of minimum wages have led teachers' unions to consider the possibility of strikes in the coming days.

For its part, CTERA also plans to launch actions, including a 24-hour strike for next Monday and another similar action for the following Monday. This situation could complicate the start of classes in 12 provinces in the coming days.
