Protests in Argentina over layoffs at PAMI

The General Secretary of ATE, Rodolfo Aguiar, reported that more than 5 million retirees from PAMI are without private medical benefits, while prior to the mobilizations to Capital Humano and PAMI, officials of the social security were looking to dismiss him after 23 years of work in the institution.

During a pre-mobilization action, state workers united in ATE were repressed by Federal Police and Naval Prefecture forces with tear gas and rubber bullets, leaving several people injured who required medical attention at Rivadavia Hospital. This repression occurred in the context of a day of struggle and mobilization to Capital Humano and PAMI.

ATE reported a series of irregularities in PAMI, such as delays in delivering medications, lack of purchases of physiotherapy equipment, overbilling by specialist doctors, and illegal charges for additional fees and differentiated rates for retirees, among other issues. They also warned about wage freezes and layoffs in the agency that affect its operations.

In the protest against layoffs in Capital Humano and the wage freeze, Rodolfo Aguiar reiterated that the Government seeks to dismantle programs and social assistance policies for the most vulnerable populations, while warning that the demands will continue without respite.
