The Senate discussed a Clean Slate Law project while President Javier Milei is involved in a cryptocurrency scam scandal, according to López. It is criticized that the main opposition leader is being targeted to divert attention from other issues. On the other hand, Senator Mariano Recalde accused Milei of being a scammer and a criminal, stating that the initiative does not aim to clean up politics but to ban certain political actors.
Senators from various parties, such as radicals and others like Luis Juez, defended the project. This proposes that leaders with a second conviction for corruption cannot run for elective office. It establishes that the deadline for second-instance sentences affecting electoral participation is 180 days before the general elections, with April 29 being the deadline for this year. Rulings after this date will not annul the electoral participation of convicted candidates.
The ruling party and allied blocs managed to rule on the project in the Senate, which prevents those convicted of corruption from being candidates in the October elections. The discussion generated tension since, if approved, former President Cristina Kirchner would not be able to run. Kirchnerism also mentioned the scandal that President Milei is embroiled in regarding the cryptocurrency scandal.
During the meeting in the Constitutional Affairs Committee, Anabel Fernández Sagasti requested modifications concerning convicting offenses, threatening to present a minority opinion. Senator Florencia López also denounced the possible "ban" against the former president, in addition to mentioning the Libra case, which sparked criticism against the Casa Rosada.
