Federal Encounter deputies presented a resolution project to request the questioning of several key government officials in Argentina amid the Libra cryptocurrency scandal. The legislators seek for the Secretary-General of the Presidency, Karina Milei, the Chief of Cabinet, Guillermo Francos, the Minister of Justice, Mariano Cáneo Libarona, and the presidential spokesperson, Manuel Adorni, to appear before Congress to explain the "economic, institutional, and legal consequences" arising from the alleged fraud related to the launch of this cryptocurrency.
In the resolution project, questions are raised about President Javier Milei's participation in promoting the digital asset, potential undue benefits, economic and financial impact, institutional responsibility, and future actions. The deputies argue that the promotion of a financial asset without regulation or backing, supported by a high-ranking official, could have misled investors, which in turn would affect the image of Argentine institutions and the country's credibility in international financial markets.
The legislators also raise specific questions about potential remuneration received, labor relations, access to technical reports on asset risks, meetings prior to the cryptocurrency launch, and actions taken to prevent insider trading abuses. Additionally, they request information about Milei's defense strategy against the allegations and whether he will use personal or state resources to fund his defense, among other issues.
Another legislative bloc, the Civic Coalition, also presented a project to summon Francos as a political responsible before Congress to report and answer questions about the cryptocurrency scandal.
