Amid rising controversy over his promotion of the cryptocurrency $LIBRA, President Javier Milei faces a political trial initiated by the opposition. This could impact his presidency and reform agenda as accusations of crypto fraud surface.

Political Trial Against President Milei Over Crypto Scandal

The opposition, led by the Union for the Homeland (UxP) bloc, has decided to push for a political trial against President Javier Milei following the scandal arising from the promotion of a cryptocurrency on his social media. This measure seeks for Congress to investigate and, if necessary, remove the accused with a two-thirds majority in the Senate, acting in this body as a court.

Amidst the controversy, Milei chose to intervene, stating: "Milei's involvement in a crypto fraud is of enormous gravity," as indicated by UxP on social media.

The scandal began when Milei tweeted promoting the cryptocurrency $LIBRA, which led to a rapid increase in its value, generating criticism and accusations of "crypto fraud." The president later explained that he was not aware of the project's details and, after getting informed, decided not to continue promoting it, deleting the tweet.

The presentation of the political trial would represent a considerable political challenge for Milei, who assumed the presidency with a platform of liberal reforms in December 2023. Despite the complexity and duration of the political trial process, its initiation has already been agreed upon by the opposition and will be formalized this week.

Additionally, a Research Task Unit has been created to investigate the launch of the cryptocurrency $LIBRA and the individuals or companies related to the operation. The controversy has generated reactions in various political sectors, with calls for investigation and opinions both for and against Milei's removal.
