Tensions Rise in Argentine Senate Over Ficha Limpia

The Argentine Senate is set to debate the controversial Ficha Limpia project, aimed at barring candidates convicted of corruption, amidst growing political tensions and strategic maneuvering.

Tensions Rise in Argentine Senate Over Ficha Limpia

The Kirchnerist senator Mariano Recalde was accused by his opponent of leading the case of Edgardo Kueider, who fell into disgrace. The rumors are based on the briefing of federal judge Ariel Lijo, presented right at the beginning of the Constitutional Affairs Commission addressing the suspension of the PASO. Speculations suggest that the Government would be pressuring Kirchnerism with the Clean Slate law to gain support and ensure the appointment of the magistrate.

Some believe that Casa Rosada seeks to place Lijo and Manuel García Mansilla in the Supreme Court, even if they need to seek votes outside their block to achieve this. It is rumored that Carlos Espíndola and Mónica Silva could support the Clean Slate law, creating uncertainty within the ruling party.

The Senate will soon debate the Clean Slate project, and a session is expected in the first days of March. Despite having had a relatively easy path in the Chamber of Deputies, the project is expected to face obstacles in the Senate. The Kirchnerist bloc has 34 votes, just two less than needed to block the initiative.

Attention is focused on senators Sonia Rojas Decut and Carlos Arce as possible sources of opposing votes. Other figures such as Natalia Gadano and José María Carambia could also be decisive in this debate. Uncertainty surrounds the possible outcome of the vote in the Senate, given the ruling party's need to secure support for its projects.
