The Chamber of Deputies approved a joint declaration demanding the release of the Argentine gendarme Nahuel Agustín Gallo, detained in Venezuela since December 8, 2024. "We will submit it as a unanimous declaration unless someone expresses otherwise," explained the head of the Foreign Relations Commission, Fernando Iglesias. The declaration condemns the detention of Gallo, a member of the Argentine National Gendarmerie, in Venezuela during an entry procedure into the Bolivarian country, describing it as unjust and a violation of human rights.
The document issued by the Chamber of Deputies denounces the detention as an arbitrary measure and demands that the government of Nicolás Maduro immediately release the Argentine gendarme, as well as guarantees for his integrity until he is freed. It claims Gallo's right to dignified detention conditions, to receive visits, to communicate with his family, to receive consular assistance, and to appoint his own defense attorney.
Parliamentarian Cecilia Moreau initially promoted the request for Gallo's release, calling for unity in Parliament around this issue, which she considers very serious. "This is not a topic to make videos on Twitter or to show divisions," she emphasized. In this context, Iglesias expressed his hope that the declaration would be approved unanimously, highlighting that it is a demand for the human rights of an Argentine unjustly detained.
Following the presentation of the text by Iglesias, the declaration received unanimous support from all factions present in the parliamentary session. The approval was carried out by a show of hands, without objections, evidencing a unanimous call for the release of Nahuel Agustín Gallo. The parliamentarian also mentioned that the Unión por la Patria faction joined the request for Gallo's release, thereby consolidating cross-party support in the Chamber of Deputies in this case.
