The Argentine government announced changes to Law 26.743 through its presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni at a press conference. The modification will prohibit minors under 18 from making registrar changes and undergoing hormone treatment and body adaptation surgeries. It was also mentioned that detained individuals will be housed according to their registered sex at the time of detention.
In response to this measure, the Argentine LGBT+ Federation clarified that the president cannot amend a national law by decree and that the Identity Law does not include reassignment surgeries for minors under 18. It was pointed out that the current law allows individuals to access medical treatments to align their bodies with their gender identity.
Adorni stated that the changes in the law aim to prevent minors from receiving hormone treatments and gender reassignment surgeries. On the other hand, the Argentine LGBT+ Federation accused the government of resorting to lies and distortion in their rhetoric, warning that they will resort to Justice and the Inter-American Court if necessary to defend the rights of the transvestite community.
These changes in the Gender Identity Law occur after the Federal Pride March and have generated controversy in society. While the government defends the measure as a way to protect minors, LGBT+ activists criticize the prohibition of access to medical treatments for transvestite youth, asserting that the current regulations allow individuals to adapt their bodies to their identity.
