Debate in Congress Over Primary Elections Suspension

The block of deputies will decide tomorrow whether to support the government's bill to suspend the upcoming primary elections, a critical move before the extraordinary session starts.

Debate in Congress Over Primary Elections Suspension

The opposition blocs in the Chamber of Deputies will meet tomorrow to decide whether they will support the government’s bill to suspend the primary elections. The ruling party needs 129 votes and is still uncertain about obtaining that majority.

The government proposed the elimination of the PASO and the majority of state funding to political parties. However, the dialogue blocs are only willing to support a suspension for this year and discuss a more profound reform in the future. La Libertad Avanza plans to address the suspension of the PASO next Thursday.

Meetings of the UCR, Encuentro Federal, and Unión por la Patria blocs will take place before a plenary committee meeting chaired by the ruling party. The decision to call a plenary committee meeting was made after meetings with representatives from various blocs.

"The position that UP will take will be key since the ruling party needs at least a dozen members from that caucus to support that proposal," parliamentary sources highlighted. Meanwhile, the UCR and Encuentro Federal are also debating internally their stance on the suspension of the PASO.

The ruling party seeks to expedite the approval of the electoral reform law to avoid the PASO. The agenda for extraordinary sessions also includes projects on Clean Slate, Absentee Trial, Reiteration, Anti-Mafia Law, and other bills.
