The Minister of Justice, Mariano Cáneo Libarona, confirmed that Javier Milei's government plans to eliminate the figure of femicide from the Argentine Penal Code and questioned feminism by considering it a distortion of the concept of equality. He emphasized that the libertarian administration defends equality before the law enshrined in the National Constitution.
"No life is worth more than another," emphasized the minister, adding that feminism seeks privileges and divides the population. Cáneo Libarona expressed that for years they have used women and belittled men. He insisted that everyone, regardless of sex, should be equal before the law and deserves the same protection and respect.
Regarding the repeal of the figure of femicide, it is considered that the State cannot take charge of every sector deemed a minority. A project called "Equality before the Law" is being worked on to repeal what is perceived as positive discrimination. It is also planned to revoke some laws related to gender identity and electoral parity, among other aspects.
Despite concerning statistics showing one femicide every 29 hours and a total of 255 femicides registered in 2024, the government seeks to eliminate the figure as an aggravating circumstance and address historical inequalities. They argue that there should not be a higher penalty for the homicide of a woman compared to that of a man, following Milei's statements on gender differences in situations such as the prison population and casualties in armed conflicts.
