A nursing home in the province of Chubut has been shut down due to unsanitary conditions, including a bedbug infestation and a serious violation of the human rights of its residents.
The investigation was launched following several anonymous complaints warning of the serious problems within the facility. The Chubut Public Defender for the Rights of Older Adults determined, according to the Argentine News Agency, the poor conditions of a home in the city of Trevelin where retirees lived and who were sick due to the extremely unsanitary conditions.
Authorities detailed that after the initial evaluation of the videos sent, they confirmed the presence of pests, mattresses were in an inadequate state, and the adults presented lesions compatible with bites.
In this way, as reported by the ADNSur outlet, an inspection was carried out in which the existence of bedbug plagues, lack of hygiene, persistent odors, as well as mattresses and bedding in inadequate condition was verified.
With the information obtained, the Public Defender drew up the corresponding act and ordered the immediate intervention of the Provincial Ministry of Health and the Municipality of Trevelin, the preventive closure of the establishment, and the urgent relocation of the elderly, guaranteeing their integrity and dignified living conditions.
Likewise, the case was reported to the Public Prosecutor's Office to determine the possible criminal liability of those in charge.
