Argentina Declares Health Alert Over Sheep Scabies Outbreak

The National Service of Health and Food Quality (SENASA) has declared a health alert due to sheep scabies in seven departments of the Chubut province. This was published today in the Official Gazette. According to Resolution 939/2025, signed by the agency's president, María Beatriz Giraudo Gaviglio, the alert is in effect until December 31, 2026, for the departments of Gastre, Telsen, Cushamen, Languiñeo, Paso de Indios, Mártires, and Gaiman. The resolution's considerations state that after the detection of new scabies foci in bordering free areas, official tests concluded that injectable veterinary products with macrocyclic lactones were unsatisfactory, as they did not eradicate the disease in 100% of treated animals. The resolution makes it mandatory for authorities, veterinarians, transporters, producers, and any person or entity linked to the sector to report the disease, under penalty of sanctions stipulated in Law 27.233. The movement of sheep and their products from alert zones to free zones will only be authorized after a sanitary risk assessment. This requires undergoing preventive treatment with two immersion baths ten to twelve days apart, presenting an official health inspection certificate, and complying with a 24-day quarantine at the destination establishment. SENASA specified that immersion baths with approved products have proven effective for eradication, unlike injectable treatments.
