Patagonian Governors Unite in Fight Against Fires

The governors of six provinces in the Patagonian region have agreed on a regional protocol to address the wildfires currently affecting three of those provinces. The lack of favorable forecasts predicting rain in the coming days poses an additional challenge for firefighting teams, whose priority is to protect homes and buildings in populated areas.

The most significant active fires have consumed over 18 thousand hectares of land, with the gravest one occurring within Nahuel Huapi National Park. Teams of firefighters continue to work hard in the affected area to surpass the flames. According to information from Diario Jornada, it is suspected that three of the fires were intentionally started, prompting governors to adopt stronger measures.

To prevent future fire episodes in the coming months, the governors of Río Negro, Chubut, Neuquén, La Pampa, Santa Cruz, and Tierra del Fuego have prepared a joint document expressing their commitment to supporting the fight against wildfires in the mountainous region. Given the projections from the National Meteorological Service indicating precipitation below historical values and higher than usual temperatures, it is necessary to strengthen fire prevention and control measures in the region.

In the joint statement, they highlighted the importance of combining efforts to confront the current crisis and protect vulnerable communities. The current emergency situation has led governors to implement more effective strategies to contain and extinguish the fires, as well as to promote the adoption of long-term preventive measures.
