Storm Warning and Flooding in Tucumán Province

Buenos Aires, March 11 (NA) — A severe storm warning is in effect today in Tucumán amid ongoing operations to address serious flooding in various areas of the province. The hardest-hit locality is La Madrid, where hundreds of families had to abandon their homes and spend the night on the road or in evacuation centers. In recent hours, authorities reported that due to the intense rainfall last Sunday, several areas are flooded, roads are cut off, and homes are damaged. An estimated 170 millimeters of rain fell in just a few hours. Governor Osvaldo Jaldo also highlighted during a press conference that the Marapa River has overflowed, causing severe damage to the towns along its banks. Following a day of heavy precipitation that affected much of the province, the Executive Branch traveled to the Graneros department to closely monitor the behavior of the Marapa River, which is also affected by rains in Catamarca. At the governor's direct instruction, ministers and emergency teams are working on-site to assist families and inspect the flood defenses. One of the most striking images of the storm was that of over 200 families who had to move to the roadside or an evacuation center after losing everything in their homes. While the victims are being assisted, SIPROSA (107) personnel and road crews with heavy machinery are working on National Route 157 to ensure transit and immediate medical attention. According to official forecasts, the highest water flow in the La Madrid area occurred around 10 or 11 PM on Tuesday, so authorities remained on site throughout the night. It was announced that classes are suspended until Friday, March 13, throughout the province. The National Meteorological Service has issued a yellow alert for Wednesday due to strong storms, but rain is expected to continue until Friday.
