On Monday, an unusual weather event shook the southeastern region of Buenos Aires province, keeping security operations on its beaches on high alert. Sebastián Balone, a lifeguard from Santa Clara del Mar, recounted in an interview with LN+ that while they had been monitoring sea conditions since early January, the incident was unprecedented in its speed and intensity. According to the Argentine News Agency, the phenomenon caused the sea to recede unexpectedly before its volume surged dramatically, trapping families and children enjoying a day with a 40-degree heat index. The tragic incident resulted in one fatality. The victim was identified as a 29-year-old man, born in Mar del Plata but residing in France, who was on vacation with his girlfriend. The young man was fishing from the shore and, unable to swim, could not resist the force of the water mass that dragged him, causing injuries that proved fatal despite resuscitation efforts by lifeguards. In response to the emergency, the Civil Defense and Police ordered the evacuation of the water and removed fishermen from the breakwaters as a precaution against possible aftershocks. At the Primary Care Unit in Santa Clara, assistance was provided to about 11 people with scrapes and various bruises. Additionally, one patient had to be urgently transferred to the Mar del Plata Acute Interzonal Hospital after suffering a medical complication. Municipal authorities toured the affected posts to assess damage and coordinate prevention tasks, urging vacationers to exercise caution while still enjoying the beaches.
