An unusual and violent maritime phenomenon caused scenes of panic this Sunday afternoon in Santa Clara del Mar, a traditional seaside town of just over five thousand inhabitants located about 20 kilometers from Mar del Plata. The sea receded abruptly and then advanced forcefully with a succession of large waves that swept everything in their path in the beach area. According to eyewitnesses, the episode occurred in the area known as California Beach, where dozens of tourists were enjoying the afternoon without noticing any prior signs of danger. 'There are injured people and many rescued,' reflecting the climate of anguish that was experienced in the place. Specialists consulted indicated that, although popularly it was spoken of as a 'mini tsunami', it will be necessary to analyze the meteorological and oceanographic conditions to determine if it was a strong southeast storm, a deep sea phenomenon or a combination of factors that generated anomalous wave behavior.
