Buenos Aires, Dec 13 (NA) -- Hector Alterio, the renowned actor who passed away at the age of 96, accumulated a host of awards and had a distinguished career spanning over 60 years. He was part of projects that earned him an Academy Award, for which he was nominated at least five times, among other honors. According to the Argentine News Agency, the artistic world is in mourning this afternoon following the death of the renowned interpreter in Madrid. Known for the phrase "Life is worth living" and for bringing to life thousands of endearing characters, one of which even cost him an exile in Spain during Argentina's last civic-military dictatorship. In 1972, Alterio won the Silver Condor Award for Best Supporting Actor for "The Mafia." Two years later, in 1974, came the first Oscar nomination for an Argentine film, "The Truce," which was nominated for "Best Foreign Language Film" and featured the artist. The actor won the Silver Shell for Best Actor for "To an Unknown God" at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in 1977. In 1980 and 1984, he received two more Oscar nominations for "The Nest" and "Camila," respectively. Finally, the Academy recognized "The Official Story" with an Oscar in 1985, in which the renowned actor was part of the cast. In 2003, the actor received an Honorary Goya in Spain for his career and, in the same year, an honorary ACE for his artistic career. In 2004, he won the Goya Honor for Spanish cinema and in 2008, a Silver Condor for Argentine cinema. The same film was recognized with the Ecumenical Jury Prize for "The Official Story" at the Cannes Festival just a few months later. The memorable "Son of the Bride," where Alterio shared the screen with Ricardo Darín and Norma Aleandro, received an Academy nomination in 2001.
