Patriotic Songs in Argentina: a Study for Tradition Day

On the occasion of Tradition Day, a report revealed that patriotic songs sound 'louder' due to the pride and emotion they generate. According to a national survey by the Social Research Center (CIS) of UADE, the 'Argentine National Anthem' (40%) and the 'San Lorenzo March' (35%) top the preferences of Argentines. The survey, which gathered 1,110 responses across the country, aimed to find out which melodies represent Argentines today and what place they hold among new generations. Pride and 'goosebumps' The emotional component is one of the key findings of the study. Regardless of ideology or age, the predominant feelings when listening to a patriotic song are intense: 36% of respondents declare feeling 'pride'. 32% feel 'emotion' or 'goosebumps'. The main reasons for choosing a favorite song are not only symbolic but also aesthetic: the music/melody (27%) and the lyrics (26%) are the most cited reasons. The generational paradox: 'It's being lost, but it must be taught' The UADE report reveals a strong perception of a generational gap. Over 40% (43%) of participants believe that patriotic songs have 'much less value' for new generations. However, this perception creates an apparent contradiction: an almost unanimous consensus (89%) advocates for their mandatory teaching in schools. The school is thus reaffirmed as the main space for symbolic transmission. In fact, 61% of respondents say their identification with these songs began in childhood or at school. Unity, freedom, and tradition When asked about the values evoked by patriotic songs, Argentines mainly mentioned 'unity and national identity' (33%) and 'freedom' (23%). Tradition weighs more than innovation: 64% prefer traditional versions over modern reinterpretations. If they had to add a new song to the patriotic repertoire, 41% would choose a traditional folk piece, while 33% would prefer not to incorporate any new piece. The 'national spirit' is sonorously represented by the symphonic/military band (39%) and the creole guitar (34%). Beyond the Anthem: what other songs are emotional Although the Anthem and the San Lorenzo March (associated with the undisputed figure of San MartĂn) account for 75% of preferences, other pieces appeared in the open answers. 4% of respondents mentioned other marches such as 'Malvinas March' and 'Aurora', as well as popular and folk songs like 'Solo le pido a Dios', 'Zamba de mi esperanza', and 'Color esperanza'.
