Argentina Celebrates News Vendor Day

On Friday, November 7, Argentina celebrates News Vendor Day, a non-working holiday for newspaper vendors to honor their historical role in connecting the press with the public.

Argentina Celebrates News Vendor Day

This Friday, November 7th, there will be no sale of newspapers or magazines in kiosks throughout Argentina. The reason for this is the celebration of the 'Canillita' Day (News Vendor Day). As happens every year on this date, it is a non-working day for all members of the union of newspaper vendors and distributors. This pause in distribution aims to recognize the work of those who have historically connected the press with its readers. Although print newspapers will not reach the kiosks, the digital portals of major media outlets continue to update as usual. The date of November 7th was chosen to commemorate the birth of Florencio Sánchez, an influential Uruguayan playwright and journalist. It was Sánchez who popularized the term 'canillita' in Argentina at the beginning of the 20th century, thanks to his successful theatrical play 'Canillita', premiered in 1902. The play recounted the life of a humble boy who sold newspapers on the street to help his family. The celebration was officially established in 1947 by the Union of Newspaper and Magazine Sellers of the City of Buenos Aires (Sivendia), which ruled that the guild's workers would not provide services on that day.
