Guillermo Barros Schelotto, the head coach of Vélez, was very self-critical after the draw of Olimpia against his team in the fourth round of Group H of the Copa Libertadores. In his statements, he admitted that in the second half, Olimpia exerted constant pressure with long balls, set pieces, and second balls, elements typical of a high-level match.
Barros Schelotto also mentioned that Brazilian referee Raphael Claus had some responsibility for the performance of the match. Despite this, the coach acknowledged that his team deserved to win based on their performance in the first half. He emphasized the importance of learning to play in this type of Copa Libertadores match.
The coach, who took over from Sebastián Domínguez without being able to conduct preseason training with the team, pointed out that this factor has influenced the unfavorable results of the team in recent matches. He expressed the need to achieve more balance in the results and to work towards obtaining a convincing victory in the next match.
Vélez managed to take the lead with a goal from Maher Carrizo in the first half, but Olimpia equalized the match in the 47th minute of the second half. In light of this situation, Barros Schelotto highlighted the importance of strengthening the defensive aspect of the team.
The coach referred to the upcoming crucial matchup against San Antonio Bulo Bulo from Bolivia, where a victory would secure Vélez's qualification to the knockout stage of the Copa Libertadores. In this regard, he stressed the need to take it step by step and not be so exposed to winning or losing.
