La Fraternidad, a union representing railway drivers and machinists in Argentina, has approved in assembly the suspension of passenger and freight rail service throughout the country. During a press conference, the union leader, Omar Maturano, announced that on March 1st a strike will be held in commemoration of Railway Day. This decision is part of the resolutions taken in the assembly, where it was also agreed to leave open the possibility of a new strike in February.
"On March 1st, every driver and every assistant of La Fraternidad and its members will take the railway day off and will not provide service," Maturano stated. According to the unionist, this decision was approved unanimously during the union assembly. It was also resolved to keep options open for taking measures deemed appropriate in February.
One of the points that led to this determination was the repudiation towards the authorities of Trenes Argentinos for using the name of the union to announce the measure. With this suspension of service, it is expected to express the discontent of railway workers with the company's actions and reaffirm the importance of commemorating Railway Day.
