Milei Establishes Conditions to Lift the Currency Lock

Javier Milei, the acting president, established the necessary conditions to lift the currency controls in Argentina. He stated that the lifting of these restrictions would be subject to certain indicators. Firstly, it is expected that inflation remains around 2.5% for three months. Subsequently, the crawling peg would be reduced to 1%. By February or March, if inflation is at 1.5%, and if the excess liquidity disappears and the stock issues of the Central Bank are resolved, the currency controls could be lifted.

Regarding the exact date of the removal of restrictions, Milei noted that it cannot be announced in advance, as his government operates from a liberal perspective and this decision will depend on the evolution of economic factors. He emphasized that in six months, the quasi-fiscal deficit has been eliminated and the Central Bank's debt has been reduced.

During an interview on the program "Cristina sin vueltas," hosted by Cristina Pérez on Radio Rivadavia, Milei reaffirmed his positions on currency competition and endogenous dollarization. He highlighted the stabilization of the monetary base, which has remained constant since May or June, and suggested that the economy could eventually become de facto dollarized. He insisted on the importance of achieving inflation stability, even without the application of the crawling peg.
