Subway Workers Strike in Argentina

The Secretary General of the Trade Union Association of Subway and Premetro Workers (AGTSyP), Roberto Pianelli, stated that the strike announced for the next day is due to the socioeconomic policies of President Javier Milei, which have led to poverty and misery exponentially. During an interview on Radio Splendid, Pianelli pointed out that subway workers are earning one million pesos while a family needs at least one and a half million to not be considered poor.

Pianelli strongly criticized the government, indicating that the bargaining agreements are very delayed and that those who think that agreements can be reached with this administration are mistaken. He mentioned that the increase in fares has led to a 40% drop in the number of users and pointed out that instead of enhancing transport services, the government has decided to raise fares.

The union leader also commented that salaries have not recovered since the beginning of the year and that people are currently seen sleeping at subway entrances, something he had never seen before. Regarding the strike called by the Motor Vehicle Operators Union (UTA), Pianelli considered it foolish to hold another strike the next day and criticized the UTA for being a disintegrating organization.

Finally, Pianelli stated that all strikes are political, especially those that are not corporate, and emphasized that despite the lack of calls from the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), they are receiving support from other unions of the CTA and many bus lines that have decided not to operate in alignment with the announced protest.
