Starting next year, the province of Misiones will implement a tourist tax for foreigners staying in local hotels. This measure was approved in the Legislature of Misiones, following the approval of the provincial budget for 2025.
The tax will range between one and two dollars and will be allocated to the creation of a provincial fund integrated with the resources from this tax, which will be used to promote international tourism in Misiones. The main objective of this tax is to maximize opportunities for international tourism, enhancing economic and social development throughout the province.
The provincial government plans to use the funds collected to improve tourism services, as well as for the conservation of infrastructure and the promotion of tourism. However, opposition representatives have criticized the decision, arguing that there was no proper debate and that the measure could discourage the arrival of foreign tourists, especially due to the strong competition from Brazil, where accommodation costs tend to be lower.
It is important to note that the collection of a tourist tax from foreign visitors is already applied in other tourist destinations in Argentina, such as the City of Buenos Aires and San Carlos de Bariloche.
