The Argentine agricultural sector, being the third largest food producer in the world, is undergoing a moment of redefinition due to low international prices, climatic challenges, and environmental goals. In this context, the importance of the energy sector stands out as a hope for Argentina. Stakeholders in agriculture seek to adapt to this scenario by diversifying their activities, even venturing into energy generation from biomass.
At a sector meeting during the IDEA Colloquium, the need to increase efficiency and production, aligning with international standards, was discussed. Key figures in agriculture emphasize the importance of producing more and better to meet global food demand. Marcos Sabelli, CEO of Profertil, stressed the concept of food security, pointing out that producing for an additional 25% of the population implies a 50% increase in food production, without the need to expand arable land.
Participants at the meeting highlighted the opportunities Argentina offers in terms of natural resources, such as solar energy in the north of the country, wind energy, and the capabilities of the agricultural sector. The importance of adding value to production to enhance foreign exchange income for the country was emphasized. Juan Farinati, President of Bayer, mentioned that the agro-industrial sector is a major contributor to the Argentine economy and that it is necessary to focus on value-added products.
Among the goals set, there is a need to improve infrastructure to increase production and product quality. Despite the difficulties, companies in the sector are committed to the goal of producing more and better. It is emphasized that the agro-bioindustrial sector is responsible for 83% of the foreign exchange entering the country, underscoring its relevance to the national economy. Stakeholders in agriculture agree on the importance of a cultural shift towards efficiency and innovation to address upcoming challenges and meet the demands of the constantly growing global market.
