Argentina Declares Phytosanitary Alert Due to Tucura Sapo Insect

The National Service of Health and Food Quality (SENASA) declared a Phytosanitary Alert in the provinces of Río Negro, Chubut, and Santa Cruz due to the presence and spread of the Tucura Sapo (Bufonacris claraziana). This insect is endemic to the Patagonian region, and health authorities stated that it “represents a serious threat to natural grasslands, as well as to agricultural production,” although it does not transmit diseases and poses no danger to humans. However, due to its biological characteristics, it must be contained to its natural habitat to prevent greater damage. The emergency was published this Tuesday in the Official Bulletin by means of Resolution 816/2025 and will be in effect until March 31, 2026. This measure aims to strengthen “the tasks of control, prevention, and surveillance of this pest, which in recent years has shown significant expansion throughout the Patagonian steppe.” According to the national body, the territorial advance of the Tucura Sapo—a native species that feeds on forage and various herbaceous plants—puts at risk the productive base of small producers, family farmers, and rural communities. In appearance, it is similar to a locust or grasshopper: it belongs to the group of acridids, with a robust body and large hind legs that allow it to jump, in addition to having long antennae.
