President Javier Milei stated today that taxes will continue to be paid in pesos, denying the possibility of using dollars stored at home to meet tax obligations. However, he expressed his government's intention to increase the circulation of dollars in the Argentine economy. In a speech at the Latam Economic Forum 2025 market, the president highlighted the elimination of currency controls, noting that they managed to secure 20 billion dollars to strengthen the economy.
Milei suggested that Argentines could have large sums of cash dollars saved, but they will continue to use pesos to pay their taxes. He emphasized that, with economic growth and remonetization, the peso will appreciate, although it will remain secondary to the dollar. The president advocated for an endogenous dollarization of the system to eventually achieve monetary freedom and avoid the impact of the inflation tax.
The president stressed the importance of citizens being able to bring their dollars into the financial system without fear of retaliation, stating that the funds brought in could drive investment and economic growth. Milei referred to those who keep dollars at home as heroes seeking to protect their earnings from the voracity of politicians.
He emphasized that during the transition, the peso will continue to circulate and be used for tax payments. The president projects that Argentina could become a world power in the next 30 to 40 years, with accelerated growth in the first 10 to 15 years. Milei advocated for an internal dollarization of the system as a tool to streamline the country's economic development process.
In his speech, Milei criticized the tax burden and inflation generated by state intervention, and defended the freedom of citizens to manage their assets. In a provocative tone, the president urged to continue moving towards a more liberal financial system, without punishing those who seek to protect their savings from depreciation caused by governmental policies.
