The union of the Automotive Transit Union (UTA) has announced a 24-hour bus strike that will take place this Tuesday, May 6, across the country. The decision was made after weeks of meetings where, according to the issued statement, no suitable salary proposals were received from the business chambers.
"We want a decent salary, in line with inflation, appropriate for the tasks we perform daily," expressed the UTA, adding that the lack of adequate agreements has led them to this action. The statement criticizes the national government for limiting negotiations and adjusting the salaries of transport workers, stating they will not allow themselves to be the variable for adjustment.
The union denounced the shrinking of the transport system with fewer units, frequencies, and workers, which they consider detrimental to the sector. The strike will impact short and medium-distance companies across the country and aims to defend the wages of transport workers without distinction.
Regarding salary negotiations, the UTA highlighted that since February they have only received offers below inflation, denying the claim of a 40% increase. The union assured that the decision to strike is not whimsical or extortionate, but a necessary measure to fight for fair wages and the sustenance of transport workers' families.
