Controversy Over Argentina's New IMF Agreement

The spokesman for the Argentine presidency, Manuel Adorni, criticized past governments for resorting to the IMF. However, under President Javier Milei, the government is set to sign a new agreement with the IMF, prompting social media backlash for the contradictory stance on debt.

Controversy Over Argentina's New IMF Agreement

The presidential spokesperson, Manuel Adorni, previously criticized strongly the governments that turned to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), considering it a sign of "total failure". However, the government of Javier Milei is moving forward with negotiations for a new agreement with the international organization. A file that went viral on social media shows old messages from Adorni where he expressed his disapproval of resorting to the IMF, even describing it as a governmental failure.

In a tweet from March 17, 2020, Adorni stated: "Having to turn to the IMF only highlights the government's total failure". In other past publications, Adorni had criticized taking on debt during Mauricio Macri's term, deeming it immoral as it involved robbing future generations.

Currently, with La Libertad Avanza in power, both Milei and Adorni justify the new agreement with the IMF as a necessary measure to heal the finances of the Central Bank and eliminate currency restrictions. Despite the criticisms and ongoing debate about the coherence in the official discourse, the government defends the need for this indebtedness as a tool to stabilize the Argentine economy.

The discrepancy between the past positions of current government officials and their current support for negotiations with the IMF to restructure debt and strengthen the Central Bank's reserves has been highlighted. Adorni was not the only person to question indebtedness with the IMF, as Javier Milei himself had expressed his disapproval before taking office.
