Edesur Under Investigation Amid Power Outages

The National Electricity Regulatory Body (ENRE) is conducting an investigation to determine whether the recent massive power outage in the City of Buenos Aires and the Greater Buenos Aires area serviced by Edesur was the result of an accident, a contractual violation, or lack of investments. A source from the Casa Rosada mentioned that data is being collected to clarify what happened.

Edesur, a company belonging to Enel Argentina, has faced constant criticism for issues with its electricity service. Nevertheless, the company continues to operate in energy supply. Two years ago, Enel announced its intention to withdraw from Argentina, which included the sale of Edesur. However, this decision was reversed following the political victory of Milei, leading the company to maintain its operations in the country.

In 2023, Enel announced its plan to abandon Argentina and sell its assets in the country and in Peru to focus on Brazil, the United States, and Europe. The intention was to raise 21 billion euros from these sales and reduce the group's debt, in addition to advancing in renewable energies. Despite this, Enel decided to stay in Argentina, which raised concerns in Milei's government due to the recurrent problems in Edesur's service.

In light of the recent power outage, government authorities are evaluating possible sanctions against Edesur once the cause of the incident is determined. They aim to clarify whether the collapse was the result of an accident, contractual violation, or lack of investments. Depending on this, the type of sanction to be imposed will be decided, including possible fines or more severe penalties. The company has been criticized for not meeting the necessary investments in electrical infrastructure.
