New BCRA Measure Will Allow Payments in Dollars

Businesses in Argentina will be able to display prices in both pesos and dollars and decide whether to accept payments in the foreign currency, although this measure will be voluntary. Starting Friday, the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic (BCRA) will allow payments in dollars with debit cards and QR codes in stores, making it easier for consumers to pay in pesos or dollars, as long as they have a bank account in dollars and an associated card.

Payments through QR codes will enable any virtual wallet or banking application to scan and process transactions in dollars, boosting the use of foreign currency in daily transactions and formalizing operations in sectors such as tourism, real estate, and appliances. Additionally, the interoperability of the system will ensure that customers can use different payment methods without platform limitations.

The new regulation will also enable payment in installments through the scheduled DEBIN system, providing more options for consumers. The BCRA has set April 1 as the date on which this functionality will be fully operational, giving businesses enough time to adapt their systems to these changes.
