Argentine Justice has started an investigation into the case of the cryptocurrency $LIBRA, promoted by President Javier Milei and launched last week, along with a group of entrepreneurs. Federal prosecutor Eduardo Taiano, appointed by Judge MarĂa Servini, opened the investigation and requested reports from local public agencies such as the Central Bank, the National Securities Commission, and the General Inspection of Justice.
Taiano also involved the Specialized Cybercrime Prosecutor's Office and seeks to establish the circumstances surrounding the creation and launch of $LIBRA, as well as the role of each of those involved. Javier Milei and five other individuals are involved in the investigation: Mauricio Novelli, Manuel Terrones Godoy, Sergio Daniel Morales, Hayden Mark Davis from the United States, and Julian Peh from Singapore.
According to local press, the prosecutor suggested that the investigated facts could fall under abuse of authority, fraud, influence peddling, and bribery. The companies of Davis and Peh were indicated as the promoters of the launch of $LIBRA, while Novelli and Terrones Godoy are said to have acted as intermediaries between Milei and these foreign entrepreneurs.
The Argentine government has faced a political crisis since Milei supported the launch of $LIBRA, arguing that it would finance ventures and small businesses in Argentina. After an increase in its value and subsequent collapse, there were accusations of fraud, and Milei deleted his publication, refusing to take responsibility for the victims. The Argentine Justice has received complaints from affected parties, and at least one complaint has been filed with the U.S. Justice.
