The Uspallata community expressed its opposition to the San Jorge megamining project and demanded that institutions act similarly to the IIA of 2009. According to the protesters, the project does not comply with the General Environmental Impact Statement specific to Water Resources required by Law 7722. It is noted that the toxic substances to be used in flotation and the waste generated during the process exceed the levels allowed by the Hazardous Waste Law.
The neighbors and assembly members will mobilize again on Saturday at the Pure Water Triangle in Uspallata against the San Jorge project. The Environmental Impact Report Evaluation began this week, generating criticism over the potential negative consequences for the environment and the health of the population. The Chamber of Tourism, Commerce, and Industry of Uspallata opposes the project, as does the Assembly of Self-Convoked Neighbors.
The Mendoza government announced the approval of the start of the Evaluation of the San Jorge megamining project, despite the rejection from the population expressed in various mobilizations. Opponents highlight that the current project is worse than the one presented in 2009 and demand the definitive filing of the file. Attempts to impose the project are reported despite the lack of social license, and legal and environmental actions against megamining are demanded.
The protesters deny being anti anything, but state that they have convictions, arguments, and alternatives to protect their territory from the negative consequences of megamining. It is noted that the Environmental Impact Report presented is confusing and lengthy, designed to hinder its understanding. Furthermore, repressive acts and stigmatization by the government are condemned, and a transparent and respectful evaluation with the community is demanded.
