Woman in Argentina Gives Birth to Identical Triplets

A woman gave birth to genetically identical triplets on December 25 in the city of Trelew, Chubut province. This is a rare phenomenon that occurs only once in every 200 million births. According to information from local media accessed by the Argentine News Agency, the delivery took place at the newly inaugurated María Humphreys Hospital in Trelew. The three babies were born with just minutes of difference: the first at 8:49 AM and weighed 1.46 kg; the second at 9:50 AM and weighed 1.76 kg; and the third at 9:52 AM and weighed 1.69 kg. As this was a preterm birth, the triplets remain hospitalized in the Neonatology Service of the hospital, where they will continue under strict observation for nutritional recovery. Meanwhile, health authorities highlighted that the medical and nursing team intervened successfully, ensuring the safety of the mother and the babies throughout the procedure. From the hospital, they stated: “The result is the fruit of the joint work and professionalism of the obstetrics, neonatology, and nursing teams.” On the other hand, it was indicated that the pregnancy was classified as monochorionic triamniotic, an extremely rare condition where the babies share a single placenta, but each develops in its own amniotic sac. Furthermore, doctors emphasized that this is a low-frequency, high-complexity case that tests the response capacity of any hospital. From the Chubut Health Secretariat, they explained that this type of birth is exceptional and that there are no precise statistics. After the birth of the triplets, Governor Ignacio Torres stated: “It is a pride for all Chubutenses that such a special birth was attended with total professionalism in our province. The three babies and their mother are in good health.” This is the second documented case of identical triplets in the province, as the first was recorded in Comodoro Rivadavia in August 2019, but only one of the babies managed to survive.
