The assemblies in Chubut convened an environmental strike in protest against uranium megamining and radioactivity in the Chubut River. It was reported that the executive's project aims to control energy resources, including water, promote megamining and nuclear energy, jeopardizing sovereignty over natural resources. Despite community resistance, the provincial government approved project 52/25, releasing deeds for land subdivisions in native forests. Furthermore, decree 44/25 was ratified, allowing fracking in Cerro Dragón.
The Union of Community Assemblies of Chubut called for a mobilization in alert of a supposed extractivist advance benefiting the company Pan American Energy until the year 2070, with reduced royalties. Despite the history of struggle against megamining, the Legislature approved amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code introducing the figure of criminal recidivism. Javier Milei announced an Argentine Nuclear Plan in 2024 and mentioned uranium deposits in Chubut, criticizing the environmentalist stance and mentioning the possibility of selling uranium for military armament.
The Antinuclear Movement of the Argentine Republic denounced that the National Atomic Energy Commission would be preparing an international bidding for the uranium mine in Cerro Solo. A mobilization in Rawson is expected in rejection of the projects, while a project that would modify the structure of the Ministry of Hydrocarbons is being discussed in the Legislature. The CNEA confirmed the preparation of a bidding document for the exploitation of uranium in Cerro Solo and other Chubut deposits, in conjunction with the Secretariat of Energy.
The executive sent a project that modifies the provincial electro-energy policy, seen as an attempt to criminalize social protest. Announcements of uranium exploitation in Chubut by Torres coincide with the national government. The community continues to oppose megamining in the province, while the creation of a privatizable state company for the exploitation of any source of electric energy is being proposed, according to article 29.
