A Mapuche leader imprisoned in Argentina describes political persecution, rights violations in jail, and demands freedom for himself and other prisoners.

Mapuche Political Prisoner Juan Pablo Colhuan Nahuel Calls for Freedom

I, Juan Pablo Colhuan Nahuel, want to express that I am detained in this winka (white colonist) malal prison, due to the political and judicial persecution by the Argentine state against the Mapuche struggle. As has been happening since the so-called 'Conquest of the Desert', where they tried to exterminate us, make us disappear, imprison us in museums, and take us as slaves to Martín García Island, all of this because they wanted to seize our territory, natural and productive spaces to exploit and destroy them, which continues to be the case today, the winka's ambition for our land. Regarding my judicial case, I am accused of usurping 8 hectares, 35 km south of Bariloche, near Lake Relmuñfken, wrongly called Lake Mascardi; a plot they call 'Gas del Estado', adjacent to the territory where the Rewe (spiritual and ceremonial space) of my zeia Machi (spiritual authority) Betiana Ayelen Colhuan Nahuel is located. A territory where there was also much repression by the various state forces, where they detained, beat, and gassed pu pichikeche (children) and pu lamuen zomo (women, members of the community). A territory where, as is public knowledge, the 'albatrosses' murdered my Mvna, weichafe Rafael Nahueliem, from behind and wounded my zeia and another peñi (community member) with a lead bullet. All of this to defend our spirituality, the territory, the ceremonial lelfun, where the Rewe is. Today all this persecution and racism continue. On November 26, I had a virtual preparatory hearing for trial, together with the defenders from the Lawyers' Guild. I demand that my rights as a Mapuche Political Prisoner be respected, as well as the freedom or transfer of peñi Facundo Hualaa to Esquel. Enough persecution of the Mapuche people. Wiñotupe Machi Betiana Colhuan Nahuel ñi Rewe mew. Weichafe Rafael Nahuel iem lives on the territory and in the struggle. Pu kona iem, pu weichafe iem, Toki iem, pu Machi iem. Fausto Huala iem. Nicolas Huenelaf iem. Freedom to all Mapuche political prisoners. From Unit 6. Of Rawson. Juan Pablo Colhuan Nahuel. November 28, 2025.

I, Juan Pablo Colhuan Nahuel, lonko (leader) of the Lafken Winkul Mapu Lof (community), was detained on October 30 amid a media and political persecution against the Mapuche communities. As 30 days of my imprisonment have passed, I wrote a communiqué from the maximum security prison in Rawson, where I expressed that I will remain imprisoned until March 2026 for being accused of a bailable offense: land usurpation. And Federal Judge Alejandro Silva did not allow me the right to attend the hearing. I want to emphasize that the case against me is for usurpation, a bailable cause, so I could await the trial in freedom. In the previous hearing, I was informed that the trial would be in December, now they tell me it will be in March 2026, so I will continue to be imprisoned until then. I want to make it public that at 28 days of my detention, I have still not been allowed to bring food, lawen (Mapuche medicine), and basic necessity items in my name, nor have visits been authorized, even though the procedures were done on time and form. From here, I make a call and request for my immediate freedom or transfer to the prison in the city of Esquel. By ANRed. From the maximum security unit, Unit 6 of Rawson, Chubut. 1100 km from the Nahuel Wapi territory, where my tuwun (place of origin/family) is. At 28 days of my detention.

On the other hand, the lawyers from The Guild, who are handling my defense, reported on three of the four cases against him: the Bariloche court 'recognized the extinction of the criminal action in the cases of Ex Hotel Mascardi and Quinta La Escondida', where they intended to accuse him of usurpation; they also reported the lack of merit in the case called 'Los Radales', where they tried to attribute to him the arson of a Gendarmerie shack.
