Man to Remain in Detention for Arm-Breaking Robbery in Neuquén

A man identified as A.E.B.T. will remain in preventive detention for another three months for breaking both arms of a victim to steal a bicycle, a backpack, and $400,000 in cash in Neuquén. According to the Argentine News Agency, based on information from the Neuquén Public Prosecutor's Office, the incident occurred on September 28, and the extension was approved by Judge of Guarantees Juan Kees, following a request from Prosecutor Horacio Maitini. Maitini stated that the risk of flight and the need to protect the victim, who is still recovering, remain valid. The crime took place between 1 and 2 a.m. in the Neuquén capital, at the intersection of Racedo and Otto Neuman streets, where the victim approached a woman to greet her. Suddenly, her companion, the assailant, hit him with an object similar to a carpenter's rule on the head, hands, and arms. As a result, he suffered fractures in both ulnas and the fifth metacarpal, injuries that required 30 days of rest. In case of a new guilty verdict, he will serve his sentence effectively. The man has a previous suspended sentence of 2 years and 3 months, issued in July 2024, and has unstable roots, which complicated notifications in his previous case. After the assault, the accused stole the victim's bicycle, a backpack with personal documents, a wallet, and $400,000. Minutes later, police apprehended the criminal at the corner of Rosario and Pizarro while he was in possession of the bicycle and the backpack, although the wallet, documents, or money were not recovered. Prosecutor Maitini attributed the crimes of aggravated robbery by the use of an improper weapon and serious injuries to the accused during the September hearing, describing it as an act of "high violence" that left the victim, the family's breadwinner, incapacitated, even to file the complaint.
