18 Months Missing: Luciana Muñoz's Family Fights for a National Search

For 18 months, the family and activists in the Argentine city of Neuquén have demanded the nationalization of the case of the disappearance of 21-year-old Luciana Muñoz. They do not believe in the murder version and insist that she may be alive, calling on the authorities to make every effort to find her.

18 Months Missing: Luciana Muñoz's Family Fights for a National Search

However, no one is giving up. The grandmother, the mother, her teachers, friends, classmates, and all the organizations supporting the struggle continue to demand answers. As on every July 13th for the past 18 months, the Assembly for the Appearance of Luciana Muñoz mobilizes to demand progress in the search and keep the claim alive. We are not going to lower our arms, says Mirta Muñoz, the grandmother. The grandmother and mother of Luciana fought to nationalize the search for Luciana from the first day because they never believed in the hypothesis of homicide. Searching for Luciana is not just a fight for her: it is for all those who disappear, who are victims of human trafficking networks, who are killed simply for being a woman. Now there is a lot of silence and no clear news, denounced Luciana's grandmother. Every day on the 13th, in the center of Neuquén or in the west of Neuquén, Luciana's name is said out loud again. That is why we insist so much on nationalizing it, in order to be able to search for her in different ways, stated Mirta. The investigation continues without conclusive evidence, and the family is sure that Luciana is alive, a hypothesis that was never discarded by those who search for her and that remains the engine of the struggle. If Luciana had really been buried, murdered or disappeared, we do not believe that there is such a perfect crime as to leave not a single trace of her. That is why, from the first moment, we insisted that the search had to be carried out throughout the country and even beyond the borders, affirms the grandmother. Criticism of the investigation and judicial action Mirta Muñoz questioned the action of Justice and spoke of impunity and wear and tear. And we will continue to do so until Luciana appears or we have some news. We do not believe that Luciana is dead, because that is what they always told us from the province and from the provincial justice. The 21-year-old young woman from Neuquén left her grandmother's house on July 13, 2024 in the Gran Neuquén Norte neighborhood and never returned. The pain, anguish, and anger are as alive as on the first day. Too many opportunities were given to the people who had to investigate.
