Morón Municipal Employee Arrested in Gang Extortion Case

Buenos Aires, Feb 17 (NA) – One of the detainees in the case against the gang that carried out extortions from prison through dating apps, one of whose victims was soldier Rodrigo Gómez who committed suicide last December inside the Olivos Presidential Residence, was an employee of the Morón Municipality. According to the Argentine News Agency, it is Karen Yael Cufré, who worked as an employee at the Morón Security Secretariat's Monitoring Center until her arrest. Through a statement, the municipal authorities explained that Cufré “was incorporated in 2025 as temporary staff in accordance with standard procedures and with no criminal record at the time of her entry, as requested.” However, they explained that after the soldier's death and given the investigation that confirms the extortions received by Gómez from this gang, which included Cufré, “her immediate dismissal was ordered.” The statement highlights that the dismissal took place a week ago, estimated at the beginning of February, but the news was only learned in the last few hours. “The Municipality reiterates its full collaboration with Justice for the clarification of the case,” expresses the document published. Investigation in progress According to the investigation, the gang was led by two men housed in Unit No. 36 of Magdalena, plus another inmate from Unit No. 26 of Lisandro Olmos and four women. In this context, all the accused were attributed to having formed part, with varying degrees of participation, of a criminal association that would have systematically and habitually dedicated itself to obtaining the delivery, sending, deposit, or transfer of things and/or money through intimidating actions, simulation of public authority and/or invocation of a false order from it, in addition to three extortion cases. The first case was the one that harmed the soldier, whom they forced to transfer $1,413,000 to two Mercado Pago accounts on December 15th of last year. Likewise, the leaders were also charged with inciting the suicide of the grenadier Gómez, highlights the report from the Fiscales portal. According to the investigation, the criminal organization created fake profiles of women on dating apps —including “Evermatch”— to contact victims and propose to continue the conversation via WhatsApp. Soldier Rodrigo Gómez. Subsequently, they received a call from a person impersonating an officer of the Buenos Aires City Police —whose identity was usurped—, who told them that the supposed mother was about to report them and demanded they transfer money under the pretext of “helping with the situation” and avoiding the complaint. Based on the evidence gathered, it was established that the organization participated in three incidents.
