Violence Erupts at Mining Chamber Launch in Mendoza

The situation spiraled out of control in Uspallata when what began as a peaceful protest ended up being turned violent by members of the Union Obrera de la Construcción de la República Argentina (UOCRA). Amid this, there are numerous film recordings that show the escalation of violence. Local media, accustomed to favoring certain interests, focused their attacks on those who presented themselves as responsible for the situation. They even circulated a video showing an individual setting a business on fire, who turned out to be the father of a young radical activist. This situation calls into question the objectivity of media coverage.

The anti-mining protesters postponed the opening of the Mining Suppliers Chamber of Uspallata, which included the presence of businessmen, legislators, and municipal officials. The violence during the protest thwarted the planned event. Several videos circulating on the internet show the disturbances, including physical assaults carried out by a union delegate against other individuals. Additionally, it is noted that many of the agitators are supporters of a local football team.

Despite the fact that some protesters committed excesses, it is highlighted that there were infiltrators from outside the Las Heras area participating in the disturbances. The stance of local media, aligned with the official narrative, is criticized for its bias in covering the events. Mendoza Today, a pro-mining media outlet that seeks to maintain standards of objectivity, has also become embroiled in the controversy regarding this. Despite supporting the development of mining activities, it commits to condemning any acts of violence that occur during protests.
