Deputy Requests Transparency in Mendoza's CPI

This Wednesday, Deputy Emanuel Fugazzotto presented a request for information for the Directorate of Statistics and Economic Research (DEIE) to provide explanations about the methodology used to calculate the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in Mendoza. Fugazzotto expressed his concern about the lack of objections regarding the provincial inflation rate of 1.0% in January, in contrast with the 2.2% at the national level and questioned the veracity of the data, despite the lack of controversies in the region.

The legislator highlighted the possible relationship between the decrease in consumption of essential products and the reduction of inflation in the province, suggesting that transparent information is essential to understand the economic condition of Mendoza. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of knowing the composition of the basket of goods and services, the methodology for taking prices, and the updating of the measured items for an accurate assessment of the economic situation.

According to Fugazzotto, between January and November 2024, meat sales decreased by 27%, dairy products by 9.87%, and fruits and vegetables by 20.93%, reflecting the loss of purchasing power of the people of Mendoza and the impact of unemployment in various sectors. He also questioned that the CPI is only measured in Greater Mendoza and not across the rest of the province, pointing out the need for complete information for making appropriate economic decisions.

In this context, Fugazzotto concluded that transparency in the data is fundamental, as inflation cannot be polished while families see their purchasing power diminished.
