The Haedo Carnival issued a statement in response to an incident that occurred during the event they have been organizing for two decades. Despite hegemonic media focusing on an episode of violence involving young people that caused damage to a business, the organizers highlighted that the night was filled with happiness and joy for the families who enjoyed the street festival.
Amidst the controversy, the Carnival organization did not deny the situation, acknowledged their intervention to calm tempers, and emphasized that the event was able to continue after the incident. They expressed solidarity with those affected by the violence and thanked those who remained on-site to keep the true essence of the Carnival alive.
The organizers lamented the way the media covered the news, noting that they focused solely on the most negative aspect of the night, ignoring the multiple positive experiences that characterized the celebration. They defended the self-management and independence of the Carnival, stressing that they do not receive subsidies or funding to sustain the event which aims to provide a space for gathering and enjoyment for the community amidst the challenging everyday reality.
Additionally, they expressed their rejection of the use of these events by the media for political purposes and called for reflection on the importance of creating cultural and support spaces to accompany the growth of children and adolescents during such a complex stage. They also expressed their conviction that the path is not through punitive views on youth or hate speech to resolve conflicts, advocating for promoting dialogue and seeking peaceful solutions.
Finally, they thanked the neighborhood and the artists who participated in the celebration, reaffirming their commitment to continue sustaining the people's festival despite the obstacles and challenges.
