Conmebol evaluates changes to the 2030 World Cup Qualifiers
The legal director of Conmebol, Montserrat Jiménez, confirmed that the South American body is analyzing a modification to the format of the Qualifiers for the 2030 World Cup, considering the automatic qualification of Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay as host countries.
She stated that the objective is to promote a 2030 World Cup with 64 teams and to guarantee a full phase in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
Tapia presented the idea during an extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee at the Lionel Andrés Messi Predio in Ezeiza, where various items on the AFA's agenda were discussed.
The president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), Claudio Tapia, maintained that South American participation in 2030 must represent a historical reparation for the first edition, held in Uruguay, where Argentina was also involved in that 1930 World Cup final.
Tapia also highlighted the progress in Argentine football infrastructure and pointed to the capacity of the El Monumental stadium, which seats 88,000 people, and the inauguration of new venues in difficult times as examples of the "health of Argentine football".
The final decision will be made in November.
With the centenary World Cup in focus, which will begin in South America and conclude in Europe, Conmebol is working on the restructuring of the Qualifiers, affected by the loss of three teams in the fight for World Cup spots.
